After packing up camp at the KOA we took off for what turned out to be a very long day. The drive through Wyoming was beautiful, but difficult as D.B. spent a good hour navigating the twists and turns of Big Horn National Forest (think Road to Hana curvy). Other than a quick lunch break our first stop was in Rapid City, South Dakota to visit Mt. Rushmore. It was really interesting to see, and the history behind the monument is pretty amazing.
A short 45 minutes or so south of Mt. Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Monument, which was really awesome. Mt. Rushmore in it's entirety can fit into just the face of Crazy Horse. We didn't spend long here, but were really glad we stopped.
The famous Wall Drug was our next stop, where we walked around only briefly and then enjoyed dinner at the Cactus Cafe. Our waitress at the cafe was on a summer work exchange from Russia...and she got sent to Wall, South Dakota! Nothing like coming all the way to America to be stuck in the middle of nowhere!
Badlands National Park was our last visit of the day, but a perfect time of day to be there. Not only did we get to see a lot of goats, but we saw the sun set at the Badlands and it was beautiful. This is also where D.B. was sure he saw a sign for werewolves, Hillary did not see such a sign. After the Badlands we drove until midnight, gave up on the idea of camping again and got a hotel room in Chamberlin, SD. Fourteen hours in the car, might just be too long.
